A few posts back I wrote about doing more running to assist in my goal of getting in the boxing ring.
I dislike running on the road, I feel proper self conscious, I have been told not to do too much running on a treadmill. So what to do? Well the way I figure it, a boxing match is essentially bursts of frenetic fighting, then circling each other then fighting. So as well as being fit, I need to be able to do explosive energy. So what I have taken up doing is going up to the football pitches on the Great Lines, and jogging for one side, then sprinting down the other, then jogging, then running etc. As I do this, I’ll gradually increase the amount of circuits of the pitch I can do.
I’ve also, on the same tack, taken to doing lampposts. This harkens back to the olden days of football training where players did as above, but used lampposts as markers instead of the sides of a football pitch. Tonight, I’m going to do lampposts the whole way back from training.
Norma, I’m thinking you’re the expert on this, what do you reckon?
I'm no running expert, sir, but I will tell you that what you're doing is excellent. Interval training (mixing up your speed as you are with jogging, sprinting, etc.) is key to building cardiovascular endurance and contributes more to overall fitness than jogging at a steady pace. Power to you!
